First Birthday Family Photos

at Kapiolani Park

Celebrating your baby’s first birthday in Hawaii is such a special milestone — and a family photo session is a beautiful way to remember this season of life.

For this sweet first birthday session, we met at Kapiolani Park in Honolulu, just a short distance from Waikiki.

With its wide open grassy areas, tropical greenery, and beautiful views of Diamond Head, Kapiolani Park is one of my favorite locations for families who want something a little different from a traditional Hawaii beach photo session.

A First Birthday with Diamond Head in the Background

We started the session with some relaxed family photos with Diamond Head in the background.

I love capturing a mix of gently posed portraits and candid moments — especially with little ones. Some of my favorite images are often the simple moments when everyone is laughing, playing, or just enjoying being together.

And this little one gave us plenty of sweet expressions!

Sometimes You Just Need a Nap 😊

Halfway through the session, our little birthday star started getting sleepy.

And when you’re one year old, sometimes a nap simply can’t wait!

Instead of trying to push through the session, we took a little break and let this sweet little one rest.

Of course, I couldn’t resist capturing a few photos of the nap, too. With the little “ONE” birthday sign nearby, it became such a sweet memory of this stage of life.

One-year-old photo sessions don’t always go exactly according to plan — and that’s completely okay.

Babies may get sleepy, need to be held, want a snack, or suddenly become much more interested in exploring than looking at the camera.

I always try to follow each child’s pace rather than forcing a moment.

And Then… That Smile!

After a little rest, we continued the session — and were rewarded with the sweetest smiles.

This is one of the reasons I love photographing families with young children.

You never quite know what will happen, and those unexpected little moments often become part of the story of the day.

My goal isn’t only to create beautiful portraits where everyone is looking at the camera. I also want to capture the little interactions in between — the cuddles, laughter, tiny hands, sleepy moments, and the way your family feels together right now.

Because babies change so quickly, and one day these everyday moments become the ones we miss the most.

Family Photography at Kapiolani Park in Honolulu

If you’re staying in Waikiki and looking for a convenient location for family photos, Kapiolani Park is a wonderful option.

While many families visiting Oahu choose the beach for their Hawaii family photos, Kapiolani Park offers a completely different look with beautiful greenery, open space, and iconic Diamond Head views.

It can be especially lovely for first birthday photos, baby milestone sessions, and family photography in Honolulu.

If you’re planning a trip to Hawaii and looking for an Oahu family photographer, I’d love to help you document your family while you’re here.

We’ll keep things relaxed, follow your little one’s pace, and capture a mix of natural, candid moments and timeless family portraits that will remind you of your time in Hawaii for years to come.
