Planning family photos during your Hawaii vacation? One of the first questions that often comes up is, “What should we wear?”
You want your photos to look beautiful, but choosing outfits for the whole family can feel a little overwhelming. Should everyone wear the same colors? Do you need to buy matching outfits? And what about aloha shirts?
The good news is that there's no one right way to dress for your family photos in Hawaii.
I usually recommend choosing a few colors that work well together rather than having everyone wear exactly the same thing. Most importantly, I want you and your family to feel comfortable and like yourselves.
Here are a few simple tips to help you choose outfits for your Hawaii family photo session.
You Don't Have to Match to Look Beautiful Together
One of my favorite approaches is to choose two or three coordinating colors for the whole family.
You don't need everyone to wear the same color or style. In fact, a little variety often makes family photos feel more natural and personal.
I recommend avoiding overly matching outfits. When everyone wears the exact same print, the clothing can sometimes become the main focus of the photo.
Instead, try mixing solid colors with patterns or choosing different pieces that complement one another. As a general guideline, I suggest keeping the same print to no more than two family members.
The goal is to create a look that feels connected without making everyone look exactly alike.
Colors That Photograph Beautifully in Hawaii
Hawaii's beautiful beaches, soft sand, ocean blues, and lush greenery create a wonderful natural backdrop for family photos.
Soft, natural colors often work beautifully in these settings. Some of my favorite combinations include:
- White, beige, and cream — soft, timeless, and beautiful against the ocean.
- Sage green, ivory, and tan — a lovely combination for both beach and tropical greenery.
- Dusty blue, white, and sand — fresh, relaxed, and perfect for a coastal setting.
- Soft pink, cream, and warm earth tones — gentle colors that add a little warmth.
But don't feel limited to neutral colors!
A little pop of color or a beautiful tropical print can bring personality and joy to your photos, too.
The most important thing is choosing colors that complement each other and feel natural for your family.
Aloha Attire: A Little Piece of Hawaii
If you're visiting Hawaii, why not add a little aloha spirit to your family photos?
Aloha shirts and Hawaiian dresses are a fun way to bring something special to your vacation photos. They can also become a lovely reminder of your time on the islands.
You don't have to dress everyone in matching aloha prints, either!
Dad might wear an aloha shirt while Mom chooses a simple dress. The kids can wear solid colors or different prints that complement the rest of the family.
You can also mix different aloha prints while keeping the overall look coordinated.
Whether you prefer a classic Hawaiian look or something more casual, choose what feels right for your family. Both can look beautiful in Hawaii.

Keep It Comfortable and Beach-Friendly
One thing I always remind families is that comfort matters, especially when you're taking photos in Hawaii.
The weather can be warm, the ocean breeze can pick up, and little ones usually want to move around and explore.
Here are a few simple things to keep in mind:
Choose light, breathable fabrics.
Cotton, linen, and other lightweight materials are wonderful for Hawaii's tropical weather. Flowy dresses can also look beautiful when they catch a gentle ocean breeze.
Barefoot is perfectly fine!
If we're photographing your family on the beach, you don't need to worry about finding the perfect shoes. Bare feet often feel more natural and relaxed in the sand.
Let the kids be comfortable.
Choose outfits your children can sit, walk, run, and play in. When kids feel comfortable, they're more likely to relax and enjoy the experience.
Keep accessories simple.
Large logos, bold lettering, and distracting accessories can sometimes draw attention away from the people in the photo. Simple details often work best.
And if your little one ends up with sandy toes or windblown hair, that's okay, too. Those little details are part of the beauty of being in Hawaii.
The Best Photos Happen When You're Just Being Yourselves
When planning family photos, it's easy to spend a lot of time thinking about outfits, poses, and making sure everything looks just right.
Of course, a classic photo with everyone looking at the camera is always wonderful to have, especially for a holiday card or a special family keepsake.
But some of my favorite moments happen when families forget about the camera for a little while.
Maybe your kids start playing in the sand. Maybe someone makes a silly joke and everyone bursts out laughing. Or maybe your little one just wants to be held close.
Those moments may not be perfectly posed, but they're often the ones that feel the most meaningful.
You don't need to know how to pose or worry about looking like a model. I'll gently guide you when needed while leaving plenty of room for your family to interact naturally and simply enjoy being together.
Beautiful family photos aren't just about what you're wearing. They're about the little connections, the laughter, and the way your family is in this season of life.
So choose outfits you feel good in, coordinate a few colors if you'd like, and don't worry about making everything perfect.
If you're planning a trip to Hawaii and looking for an Oahu family photographer, I'd love to help you capture your family just as you are — enjoying your time together, making memories, and celebrating this special chapter of your lives.
With aloha,
Aya
